10 Ways to Manage Low Back Pain at Home WITH VIDEO

10 Ways to Manage Low Back Pain at Home

Perhaps you bent the wrong way while lifting something heavy. Or you're dealing with a degenerative condition like arthritis. Whatever the cause, once you have low back pain, it can be hard to shake. About one in four Americans say they've had a recent bout of low back pain. And almost everyone can expect to experience back pain at some point in their lives.

Sometimes, it’s clearly serious: You were injured, or you feel numbness, weakness, or tingling in the legs. Call the doctor, of course. But for routine and mild low back pain, here are a few simple tips to try at home.

  • Chill it. Ice is best in the first 24 to 48 hours after an injury because it reduces inflammation, says E. Anne Reicherter, PhD, PT, DPT, associate professor of Physical Therapy at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. "Even though the warmth feels good because it helps cover up the pain and it does help relax the muscles, the heat actually inflames the inflammatory processes," she says. After 48 hours, you can switch to heat if you prefer. Whether you use heat or ice -- take it off after about 20 minutes to give your skin a rest. If pain persists, talk with a doctor.

  • Keep moving. "Our spines are like the rest of our body -- they're meant to move," says Reicherter. Keep doing your daily activities. Make the beds, go to work, walk the dog. Once you're feeling better, regular aerobic exercises like swimming, bicycling, and walking can keep you -- and your back -- more mobile. Just don't overdo it. There's no need to run a marathon when your back is sore.
  • Stay strong. Once your low back pain has receded, you can help avert future episodes of back pain by working the muscles that support your lower back, including the back extensor muscles. "They help you maintain the proper posture and alignment of your spine," Reicherter says. Having strong hip, pelvic, and abdominal muscles also gives you more back support. Avoid abdominal crunches, because they can actually put more strain on your back
  • Stretch. Don't sit slumped in your desk chair all day. Get up every 20 minutes or so and stretch the other way. "Because most of us spend a lot of time bending forward in our jobs, it's important to stand up and stretch backward throughout the day," Reicherter says. Don't forget to also stretch your legs. Some people find relief from their back pain by doing a regular stretching routine, like yoga.

  • Think ergonomically. Design your workspace so you don't have to hunch forward to see your computer monitor or reach way out for your mouse. Use a desk chair that supports your lower back and allows you to keep your feet planted firmly on the floor.

  • Watch your posture. Slumping makes it harder for your back to support your weight. Be especially careful of your posture when lifting heavy objects. Never bend over from the waist. Instead, bend and straighten from the knees.

  • Wear low heels. Exchange your four-inch pumps for flats or low heels (less than 1 inch). High heels may create a more unstable posture, and increase pressure on your lower spine
  • Kick the habit.Smoking can increase your risk for osteoporosis of the spine and other bone problems. Osteoporosis can in turn lead to compression fractures of the spine. Recent research found that smokers are more likely to have low back pain compared with nonsmokers.

  • Watch your weight. Use diet and exercise to keep your weight within a healthy range for your height. Being overweight puts excess stress on your spine.
  • Try an over-the-counter pain reliever. Anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, Nuprin), and naproxen sodium (Aleve, Anaprox, Naprosyn) can help reduce back pain. Acetaminophen (Actamin, Panadol, Tylenol) is another over-the-counter option for pain management. Be sure to check with your doctor or pharmacist about any interactions over-the-counter pain relievers may have with other medications you are taking. People with a history of certain medical conditions (such as ulcers, kidney disease, and liver disease) should avoid some medicines.

Call your doctor if:

Your low back pain is severe, doesn't go away after a few days, or it hurts even when you're at rest or lying down.
You have weakness or numbness in your legs, or you have trouble standing or walking.
You lose control over your bowels or bladder.
These could be signs that you have a nerve problem or another underlying medical condition that needs to be treated.

Problems of care giving profession, signs & symptoms and its prevention

Caregivers care for someone with an illness, injury, or disability. Caregiving can be rewarding, but it can also be challenging. Stress from caregiving is common. Women especially are at risk for the harmful health effects of caregiver stress. These health problems may include depression or anxiety. There are ways to manage caregiver stress.

What is caregiver stress?
Caregiver stress is due to the emotional and physical strain of caregiving. Caregivers report much higher levels of stress than people who are not caregivers. Many caregivers are providing help or are "on call" almost all day. Sometimes, this means there is little time for work or other family members or friends. Some caregivers may feel overwhelmed by the amount of care their aging, sick or disabled family member needs.3

Although caregiving can be very challenging, it also has its rewards. It feels good to be able to care for a loved one. Spending time together can give new meaning to your relationship.

Remember that you need to take care of yourself to be able to care for your loved one. Learn some ways to manage caregiver stress and find resources.

Who gets caregiver stress?
Anyone can get caregiver stress, but more women caregivers say they have stress and other health problems than men caregivers.2 And some women have a higher risk for health problems from caregiver stress, including those who:

  • Care for a loved one who needs constant medical care and supervision. Caregivers of people with Alzheimer's disease or dementia are more likely to have health problems and to be depressed than caregivers of people with conditions that do not require constant care.
  • Care for a spouse. Women who are caregivers of spouses are more likely to have high blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesterol and are twice as likely to have heart disease as women who provide care for others, such as parents or children.
  • Women caregivers also may be less likely to get regular screenings, and they may not get enough sleep or regular physical activity.

What are the signs and symptoms of caregiver stress?
Caregiver stress can take many forms. For instance, you may feel frustrated and angry one minute and helpless the next. You may make mistakes when giving medicines. Or you may turn to unhealthy behaviors like smoking or drinking too much alcohol.6,7

Other signs and symptoms include:

  1. Feeling overwhelmed
  2. Feeling alone, isolated, or deserted by others
  3. Sleeping too much or too little
  4. Gaining or losing a lot of weight
  5. Feeling tired most of the time
  6. Losing interest in activities you used to enjoy
  7. Becoming easily irritated or angered
  8. Feeling worried or sad often
  9. Having headaches or body aches often

Talk to your doctor about your symptoms and ways to relieve stress. Also, let others give you a break. Reach out to family, friends, or a local resource.

How does caregiver stress affect my health?
Some stress can be good for you, as it helps you cope and respond to a change or challenge. But long-term stress of any kind, including caregiver stress, can lead to serious health problems.

Some of the ways stress affects caregivers include:

  • Depression and anxiety. Women who are caregivers are more likely than men to develop symptoms of anxiety and depression.8 Anxiety and depression also raise your risk for other health problems, such as heart disease and stroke.
  • Weak immune system. Stressed caregivers may have weaker immune systems than noncaregivers and spend more days sick with the cold or flu.  A weak immune system can also make vaccines such as flu shots less effective. Also, it may take longer to recover from surgery.
  • Obesity. Stress causes weight gain in more women than men.10 Obesity raises your risk for other health problems, including heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.
  • Higher risk for chronic diseases. High levels of stress, especially when combined with depression, can raise your risk for health problems, such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes, or arthritis.9
  • Problems with short-term memory or paying attention. Caregivers of spouses with Alzheimer's disease are at higher risk for problems with short-term memory and focusing.

Caregivers also report symptoms of stress more often than people who are not caregivers.

What can I do to prevent or relieve caregiver stress?
Taking steps to relieve caregiver stress helps prevent health problems. Also, taking care of yourself helps you take better care of your loved one and enjoy the rewards of caregiving.

Here are some tips to help you prevent or manage caregiver stress:

  1. Learn ways to better help your loved one. Some hospitals offer classes that can teach you how to care for someone with an injury or illness. To find these classes, ask your doctor or call your local Area Agency on Aging.
  2. Find caregiving resources in your community to help you. Many communities have adult daycare services or respite services to give primary caregivers a break from their caregiving duties.
  3. Ask for and accept help. Make a list of ways others can help you. Let helpers choose what they would like to do. For instance, someone might sit with the person you care for while you do an errand. Someone else might pick up groceries for you.
  4. Join a support group for caregivers. You can find a general caregiver support group or a group with caregivers who care for someone with the same illness or disability as your loved one. You can share stories, pick up caregiving tips, and get support from others who face the same challenges as you do.
  5. Get organized. Make to-do lists, and set a daily routine.
  6. Take time for yourself. Stay in touch with family and friends, and do things you enjoy with your loved ones.
  7. Take care of your health. Find time to be physically active on most days of the week, choose healthy foods, and get enough sleep.
  8. See your doctor for regular checkups. Make sure to tell your doctor or nurse you are a caregiver. Also, tell her about any symptoms of depression or sickness you may have.

If you work outside the home and are feeling overwhelmed, consider taking a break from your job. Under the federal Family and Medical Leave Act, eligible employees can take  holiday for relatives. .

Care giver's Affairs to married caregivers .(.Awareness article)

NOTE:

This article is only for an acknowledgement.Day by day specially in Israel incidents of affairs has been risen up.Every person has his/her own opinion  and philosophy about the life. They all have rights to live their lives as they like. But sometimes our decision   puts our lives in the tears of ocean.'Time and tides waits for no man"Once it went out, we cannot rewind it for rearrangement. we must think twice before while  we  are about to take a step.So especially we are talking about the marriage care givers who have affairs with different  caregivers .Some caregivers prefer affairs with other caregivers. Being with someone who understands, without having to say a word, sharing the arrows and beating for loneliness. It is not only based for particular nationality they may be from same country or even different country. In fact, many of these caregivers surprise themselves by having affairs.Men commonly remark that they wish they had the energy to have one girl friend !So lets talk about the types of Affairs first.

Three types of affairs, common among this group, trend differently for men and women.

  1. Hooking up, a non-emotional connection for the purpose of having sex, is chosen by more men than women. Men seem to have easier access to this.
  2. Traditional affairs are preferred by more women than men. These are longer lasting, with an emotional as well as physical component. This types of affairs seems between the single persons. They have rights to choose the appropriate life partner. This is the true love affairs.
  3. Emotional affairs are the most common for both masculines. The caregiver becomes emotionally connected with a partner but never crosses that physical line. Many online affairs fall into this category.

When do affairs start?

Mostly care givers works and stay in employer's house in 24 hours. Its really a big challenges to them. Some of them have a holiday once a week and some of them have holiday once a month. After arriving the Israel really they in full of pressure.Every minute they have to ready for their employer. They do not have option to choose even that is day or night. They have to do everything associated to the household work as a house wife, making a appointment to the doctor, taking to the out side ,giving medicine at the right time ,dressing diapering, feeding.bathing etc. They have to be a parents of the old man, they have to lift up the employer, wake up at night frequently every thing that you all know very well about this profession.Day after day they feel alone and helpless and feel that they need some one to kill his/her loneliness. Then they start to search the good friends near over the area.On shopping or at a medical center or on the buses or in the garden where daily they go according to the nature of job.
According  to natural phenomena , male attracts female and female vise versa ,when they find appropriate person  ,first fall in the friendship relation.  Daily activities of meeting, talking, sharing the feeling and problems etc make them closer. And finally one of them purposes to be the lover.

What do affairs cost?

  1. Guilt, whether religious or otherwise, is a constant with all affairs. It’s greatly intensified if caregivers are with their lover when their spouse is rushed to the hospital - or dies.
  2. Dignity, self-respect and pride are lost. Surprisingly, some feel they also gain these from the affair.
  3. Free time is lost attending to a lover, and unexpected emotional complications may arise – particularly if the lover wants more than  offer.
  4. Trust is lost when the affair is discovered. Like all affairs, along with retribution from family members, husband, wife. legal action may be taken and assets lost – particularly devastating when decades of caregiving have already depleted assets.
  5. Financial lost:Involving an affair they must  trust  on each other.May partner  offers financial fund as a lend and later run away. which is your outcomes of hard works.
  6. Pregnancy problem :Lack  of contraceptive in hurried situation or desire open seduce of male partner may causes the pregnancy problem. If its occurs female has to put her life on risk for clearing uterus. This may in future cause female  infertility when she needs baby in future.
  7. Affairs usually end, so hurt is almost inevitable. Caregivers may end an affair, hurting their lover, because their spouse is still their number one commitment, and number one love. If a caregiver is the rejected lover, it’s devastating because they’ve lost their lifeline. They may fall into a double depression facing both the death of the affair There may be nobody to talk to about this since their lover was their only confidant.

Besides this If something happens to the employer  while they are out to fulfill his/her physical need basically at night ,care giver will be in police custody for punishment .Hidden camera can explain the activities that really care giver does in every single day at work place. So Care givers  can be caught easily at any activities against  the forbidden rule of Israeli law.

So care giver must think twice about the affairs with other married caregivers.Life is not finish in some spending years in aboard. All the family members of their country are awaiting for them. They have trust that he/she is  a good husband, wife or a parents of children. For some pleasure need   not to loose economic and social  value on the family and society.Making a good friend is really a better  idea than making affairs with the married care givers.

Singles and divorced  are also to be conscious  from this situation because mostly married male lies and pretend to be single.Married male has habit of seduction. Because of long gap with their wives they search for their physical need only.  Must be done deep survey of the particular person if he/she likes to make a traditional affairs. Divorced  person also must follow the rules of single. They have to find the person really who bears the responsibility of father  to their children if they have.

All have to keep in mind that" who am I? and for what reason my family has given this opportunity ?All are awaiting for my goodness. All family including my society will be affected if I crossed the social norms and values."

Whether to condemn or condone affairs, or to feel you are self-indulgent or critical to survival, are deeply personal considerations. Thanks ..share if you like for awareness.

Caregiving: ? Romance? Do Caregivers Have the Energy? << Read>>

 BY Jane Heller:

In 2010, on the day my husband Michael was hospitalized for the fourth time in four months, I got an email from an old boyfriend. Talk about irony. Talk about timing. Talk about temptation.

The email was out of the blue, after over a decade of silence, and not from any old boyfriend either; this was the old boyfriend with whom I’d had a passionate relationship that began after my first marriage, resumed after my second, and ended only after I met and fell in love with Michael –- an old boyfriend who’d been hard to resist, in other words. The email was merely a “Hello, how are you,” but it nearly made me pass out with excitement.

I read it for the first time after I got home from the hospital that night. I was sitting at the computer, checking my inbox, and there it was on my screen. It might as well have been written in Scarlet Letter red ink.

I was so taken aback that I read it again to make sure I wasn’t hallucinating. Had this man (we’ll call him Tom) really gotten in touch with me after so many years?

Yep. There he was, back in my life, if only in a cyberspacey way, and I didn’t know what to make of it.

For months I’d been feeling like a drudge, a drone, a hag, a crone, a person without a passionate bone in her body, much less an actual libido. I was a burned-out caregiver with neither the time nor the interest in anything other than coping with my husband’s medical disasters.

And yet, I was vulnerable. A hot guy from my past was saying hello and I found the whole thing thrilling. I focused on the email and whether I should answer it, how I should answer it, what would result if I answered it, would I be cheating on Michael if I answered it. Oh, the drama.

I ran straight to my makeup case and put on lipstick, even though I was alone in the house and even though it was ten o’clock at night and even though I was aware that I was being an idiot. And then I regarded my reflection in the bathroom mirror to see if I still had anything going for me in the looks department. I was ten years older since this guy had last seen me. Was I still desirable? Did I have any juice left? Did I even want to have any juice left?

I went back to the hospital to see Michael the next day. And because I was feeling guilty that I was obsessing about a man other than him, I said in the most blasé way, “I got an email from Tom last night. Remember him?”

“Not really,” he said while pressing the button that made the head of his bed go up and down, producing a buzz as annoying as a dental drill.

“A guy I used to go out with,” I said over the din. He continued to play with the bed. “I should probably answer. It wouldn’t be nice to ignore him, right?”

“Sure, whatever,” said Michael, thereby giving me permission to write back to my old boyfriend.

At home that night, I sat down at the computer and composed about 3,000 versions of “Hey, Tom. Great to hear from you.” I wanted to sound chirpy, upbeat, youthful, happy – as if my life had turned out so perfectly as to preclude any interest in him other than a friendship from afar. I settled on something like “Hey, Tom! What a surprise! Hope all’s well!” Lots of exclamation points for sure. I hit “send” and noticed that my palms were clammy and my heart was racing. I was like some hormonal teenager.

About an hour later, another email landed in my inbox, indicating how glad Tom was that I had responded. Then I wrote back. Then he wrote back. And so on.

Our correspondence continued for a few days, and it was exhilarating and exhausting. Neither of us mentioned spouses or encumbrances of any kind. The subject was us – how sorry we were that we’d lost touch and how we really should get together sometime.

I hated myself for keeping the communication going even as I felt justified in doing it. It was glorious to have a man pay attention to me, not as the dependable caregiver, but as a woman. I had no intention of seeing Tom again, much less running away with him, but the flirting was addictive. It made me feel like a dried-up plant that had finally been watered.

I should add that it wasn’t as if I had fallen out of love with my husband or that we weren’t still attracted to each other. It was just that he has a chronic illness and doesn’t feel well enough to have intercourse on a regular basis, so we have to pick our moments. Flirting with Tom was merely a reminder that I wasn’t dead, that my needs weren’t dead. Wasn’t that a valid reason to keep doing it?

Not after his next email, which said: “We really should get together, Jane. When?”

Game over. There could be no “when.” If I’d really wanted to be with Tom, I’d had ample opportunities over the years. What’s more, it was the fantasy of Tom that had aroused me, not the flesh-and-blood person.

Being married to a man with an illness presents many challenges, and keeping romance and s@x alive is among them. I’m lucky that Michael still thinks I’m a “dish” and whistles when I take off my clothes, but what about men and women who no longer get that satisfaction from their partner? Is infidelity a legitimate option for caregivers?

Psychotherapist Tina B. Tessina doesn’t make any moral judgments: “If it’s not hurting anybody and it’s helping you, it’s not necessarily a terrible thing. It might even make it possible to be more tender and loving with your partner. That’s why it’s not uncommon for caregivers to meet other caregivers in support groups and have an affair. They have that bond, that shared experience, and they can be kind to each other about it. But you have to make peace with yourself about it. You can’t go into it feeling like the world’s worst person. The bottom line is we’re human beings. We have needs.”

Conditions and Requirements for Extending Visas: in care giver sector after 51 months..

Conditions and Requirements for Extending Visas:

The conditions for submitting a request in accordance with the regulation are that the person being taken care of by the caregiver (the employer/patient) must have an employment permit which is, a) active,b)  not being used by another caregiver, and c) valid for the employment of foreign workers in the caregiving sector
The request should be submitted through the original request form only, and should be signed by the employer/patient, an immediatefamily member, or the employer's legal executor.
Documents from theemployer:
A letter explaining the reason for extending the license must be attached to the request and signed by the employer/patient, an immediate family member, or the employer's legal guardian. The letter must explain the exceptional humanitarian reasons thatmake the employer in need of care from the foreign careguver, and should include documents which support such a claim.
A professional opinion in writing by
i) a certified doctor, or  ii) a certified nurse, or  iii) a social worker of the local authority where the employer resides, should be attached to the request, which shows that terminating the employment of the foreignworker in a caregiving capacity will cause significant damage to the employer/patient.
A letter signed by the doctor who cares for the employer/patient should be attached to the request. The letter must explain the medical history of the employer/patient and his/her current medical situation.
A consent form in which the employer/patient gives up his/her right to medical privacy must be attached tothe request, either by the employer/patient his/herself or by his/her legal guardian.
Documents from the worker:
A declaration by the foreign worker, signed by a lawyer, in English or Hebrew - if the worker understands either language, should be attached. If in another language, the document's translation must be signed by a notary. The declaration should state that:
The worker agrees to the request of the employer/patient for the exceptional extension of his/her visa
The worker understands that if he decides to cancel his/her agreement to the request (and resign from this work), it is the worker's responsibility to leave Israel, and that a request for another employer will not be granted.
The worker understands that if the request is denied, it is the worker's responsibility to leave Israel, and that he will not be allowed to be included in the request of anotheremployer/patient.
The worker understands that if the request is accepted, it is the worker's responsibility to work only for the employer/patient who requested the visa, and that at the end of his/her employment, it is the worker's responsibility to leave Israel.
The worker agrees that the details of his previous employment in Israel, as they appear in the system ofthe Immigration Authority, will be brought to knowledge of the employer/patient if needed.
The declaration should detail the worker's family situation both in and outside of Israel, and that the worker commits to notifying the Immigration Authority regarding any change to such situation.

A signed permission from a certified doctor must be attached to the request, with the doctor's name and professional license number, that the worker is healthy and fit for work in the caregiving sector and for the employer/patient who submitted the request. It must further clarify that the worker is not sick with multiple illnesses, in accordance with the 1991 ForeignWorkers Law.

Causes for Denial of Request

If the employer/patient does not have permission of employment that is valid, active, and unoccupied by another foreign worker.
If the worker for whom the employer/patient wants to get a visa,  did not enter Israel with a valid permit and/or did not work with B/1 visa in the caregiving sector
If the worker already had a "special visa" for another employer before.
If the request was submitted without the necessary documents.

Expedited Deliberation
As a rule, a request  will not be accepted, even if it satisfies the conditions specified above, if one of the following circumstances is found:

- If the worker is in Israel for more than 7 years. The only exception is in cases where the employer/patient is disabled with a"Bituach Leumi" benefit of the maximum level - 175%

- If another employer already requested a "special visa" for this worker.

- If there was a expulsion decree against the foreign worker, if a decision was made by a certified government worker or a judicial proceeding demanding the worker leaves Israel.

-  If the foreign worker is employed in a sector that is not the caregiving sector

- If the foreign worker submitted a request for a different visa in Israel (refugee, marriage or partnership with an Israeli) or requested a humanitarian visa for medical reasons.

-  If the relationship between the employer and the worker stopped following the worker being outside of Israel for a period of more than 3 months.

The Decision of the Minister of the Interior
Following deliberation of the request, the advisory committee's recommendation is forward to the Minister of the Interior.

After the Minister of the Interior makes a decision, a letter will be sent to the current address of the employer/patient either by the minister or by someone authorized on the minister's behalf. If the request is denied,it will be detailed in the letter that the foreign worker must leave the country within 30 days. A copy of the denial letter will be sent to the immigration police, and the denial will also be updated in the system of the Immigration Authority.
If the request is accepted, the employer/patient must register through one of the manpower agencies in the caregiving field within 45days of receiving notification of the permit, and must issue a visa in Misrad Hapnim (Interior Ministry).
